The class I am teaching is a 6th grade general science class. In the class there are 10 girls and 13 boys and therefore a total amount of 23 students. The academic level of the class is heterogeneous mix of levels. There are a significant amount of IEP's in the class and one ELL student in the class. The rest of the class is a mixture of high, medium and low level learners. There is some behavior problems with in the classroom occasionally, but overall this class is a veryenergetic and mostly eager to learn. Many of the students in the class seem to really enjoy learning about science

1. Describe key trends that you discovered for this class?
I have noticed that there are many students that require constant check-ins to make sure work is completed. I have also noticed that there are many students in this class whom are eager to learn about science. There are many students who raise their hand and answer or attempt to answer questions. Even if students are not passing the class they are not completely checked out of learning.
2. Describe the needs, interests, and characteristics of your learners that surprised you.
Some of my students claimed that they do not need help, even though their grades are falling or are low. I was surprised to see so many musically inclined people with in this class. There are many IEP's in this class, 8 total.
3. How will these characteristics affect the way you plan, teach, and manage this class?
In this class I am especially careful to describe every little instruction. I have noticed that the students in this class react well to being very specific about what I want the students to complete. I find that a lot of feed back about student work also makes content more clear for this class.
You provide a good general description of the class as a whole. What is the range of some of the interests, strengths, and needs of specific students in your class? Besides being clear with instructions, how are you incorporating your students' interests in your planning and teaching? - fogleman
